Precursor to the Junior Abroad Programs
Among the local national and private universities, Tamkang University is the first institution of higher learning that inaugurated the Junior Abroad program. In fact, Tamkang has for many years been committed to promoting globalization. In July 1992, when the Ministry of Education (MOE) promulgated the regulations regarding undergraduates studying abroad, Tamkang students had already been taking short-term seminars abroad. However, it's due to Tamkang's untiring efforts that in 1994 the MOE finally approved Tamkang's petition to permit male undergraduates to spend their junior year studying abroad. Under this program, the credits they earn at the host universities can be transferred to Tamkang, thereby paving the way for local undergraduates to study for one-year at overseas universities. Marking a new milestone in ROC's higher education.    Since 1994, every year Tamkang University sends some of its juniors to study at overseas sister universities for a year. So far, over 2000students from the College of Foreign Languages alone have been at our sister universities under the Junior Abroad program. In the 2008-2009 academic year, 452 students spend their junior year studying in Japan (Reitaku University, Josai University, Josai International University, Heisei International University, Tachibana University, Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies), Korea(Kyung Hee University), USA (Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Winona State University, California State University, Sacramento, California State University, Long Beach, University of St. Thomas, The University of Michigan Flint, Washington States University, Suffolk University, The University of Maryland, Hawaii Pacific University, Sans Francisco States University), Canada (Brandon University), Spain (Universidad de Navarra), France (Universite de Franche-Comte), Finland(Laurea University of Applied Sciences), Germany (University of Bonn), Russia (St. Petersburg State University),United Kingdom(Oxford Brookes University, Sunderland University), New Zealand(Waikato University), Australia(The University of New South Wales, The University of Queensland) .
