I. About the Department The Department of Economics at Tamkang University began offering classes in the night college in 1980, and established a formal department in the university in 1986. Currently, the department has 16 full-time professors, with approximately 720 undergraduate students. The department offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

The department offers a core of theory courses including intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics, as well as specialized courses in econometrics, money and banking, economic development, financial economics, and labor economics. Students are required to take a minimum of 108 credits of required courses, along with 31 elective credits, in order to graduate.

The department strongly emphasizes research and has a significant number of faculty members involved in projects funded by the National Science Foundation of the ROC. The department also regularly holds conferences dealing with the economic problems of Taiwan.

The Graduate Institute of Applied Economics was established in 2001. Its teaching objectives are to train students to have a professional knowledge of Applied Economics and a strong ability for further study and employment; furthermore, we stimulate the students' enthusiasm and ability for advanced research.

III. Courses Descriptions A. Graduate Courses

The course program of the Graduate Institute of Applied Economics emphasizes basic economic theory and in-depth study of statistical and mathematical tools. The contents of courses also focus on exercises in person and interactions between teachers and students. The fields of all courses are as follows.

1. Basic Economic Theory
Microeconomic Theory and Macroeconomic Theory are included. These courses emphasize the training of basic economic theory and lay the theoretical foundation for relevant applications.
2. Quantitative Analysis
Econometrics I and Econometrics II are included. These courses teach students the essential concepts and methods of quantitative analysis, along with economic applications with statistical or econometric softwares.
3. Applied Economic Analysis
Applied Microeconomics, Applied Macroeconomics, and other elective courses such as The Economics of Uncertainty and Information, Applied Micro-econometrics, Economic Development and Income Distribution, Central Bank Policy, Industrial Organization in Theory and Application, Exchange Rate Determination and Financial Economic Analysis, International Trade and Regional Economic Integration, Applied Econometric Analysis, Energy Policy and Analysis, and Environmental Economic Analysis and Application are included. Besides the theoretical explanations in applied microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, these courses also deal with the applications of economic rules to real world. Through applying the methods of econometrics, students will be familiar with the procedure of testing economic theories.
4. Seminar
The graduate institute offers students three semesters of required seminars to attain the teaching goal of the ability for analyzing economic problems. Seminar I principally leads the students into the fields they are interesting to study and trains them for the ability to observe economic environment. Seminar II and Seminar III invite scholars of all economic fields and specialists with practical experience to give lectures of specific economic topics. Through understanding how they to determine the goal of study, to choose the adequate approach, and to run the study work in reality, the students will set up the foundation of investigation and writing of their theses. The courses also require the students to present their work of study topics or theses periodically for wide and valuable discussing.
B. Undergraduate Courses

The courses offered by the department provide students with a solid grounding in economic theory and teach them how to apply economic rules to the cases in real life. Especially, the department focuses on the training of students for the ability of data processing with a computer.

1. Economic Theory and Application -- Basic Approach
Principles of Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, and Intermediate Macroeconomics are included.
2. Economic Theory and Application -- Advance Approach
Public Sector Economics, International Finance, Theory of International Trade, Economic Development, Money and Banking, Monetary Theory and Policy, Urban Economics, Energy Economics, Resource Economics, Environmental Economics, Financial Economics, Industrial Organization and Game Theory, The Economics of Uncertainty and Information, and Topics of Microeconomics are included.
3. Data Processing and Analysis
Introduction to Information Science, Data Processing, The Application of Excel Statistical Tools, Statistics, Principles of Econometrics, and Applied Econometrics are included.
4. Mathematical Tools
Calculus, Introduction to Mathematical Economics, linear Programming, and Non-linear Programming are included.
5. Finance
Accounting, Financial Management, Investments, and Insurance are included.
6. Law
The Constitution of the Republic of China, Security and Exchange Law, and Fair Trade Law are included.
Except the courses mentioned above, the department offers students Appreciation of Literature and the Arts, Chinese Language, History Studies, Foreign Languages with Language Drills, Three Scientific Revolution and Universe with Space-Time, etc., in the core curriculum program. It also provides some elective courses with nine credits in three in five major categories, that is, International Cultures, Politics, Societies and Economics, Natural Sciences, Social Analysis, Futures Studies, and Moral Reasoning, according to student interests and needs to attain the triple-objective goal of globalization, information-oriented education, and future-oriented education set by Tamkang University.

Students are at present required to take a minimum of 138 credits in order to graduate. Among them there will be a minimum of 107 credits of required courses, along with a minimum of 22 elective credits of courses offered by the department. Except some very similar courses, the department recognizes all undergraduate courses offered by other departments at the university as elective credits.

IV. Guide to Economic Essays and Readings (Kleykamp David Lee) This is a two semester course which uses English to guide students through various classic topics in economics, with a particular emphasis on reading, writing, and understanding macroeconomics. The first semester considers the business cycle, money and the macroeconomy, interest rates, exchange rates, inflation, and economic growth. There are short worksheets which accompany the readings. The second semester considers issues surrounding consumption, investment, trade, and nominal wealth, again with work sheets accompanying the readings. The readings are simplified interpretations of the master works of Marshall, Keynes, Fisher, Friedman, Tobin, and Samuelson, etc. Discussion and exams are conducted in English.
V. Employment or Career Planning A. A Governor or a Professional

Our student can be a governor or a professional after passing related Professionals and Technologists Examination. Those tests more suitable for our students include: general administration, tax administration, accounting, economics administration, international trade, statistics, insurance, and so on.

B. An Administrator in Private Firm

Our student can work for private firm as an administrator responsible for the works related to accounting, international trade, statistics, finance, insurance, and so on.

VI. Items for Other Specialty Economics is the basic course in the business area. It is the only Nobel Prize subject in the area of social science. We emphasize not only the robust economics theorem but also the trainings in realistic world, which would thereby widen students' view and upgrade their comparative advantages no matter in the labor market or for jointing the advanced education system.
