History

Tamkang university, back then (1963) Tamkang science and literature institute, established a French language section, which later became the French language and literature department. As of today, there are approximately 700 students. We signed an agreement of cooperation with the French university of Franche-Comte in November 1989, and since 1994, 20 or so French majors rerolled at Franche-Comte for their 3rd year study.

This junior abroad program continued to recruit of twenty or so students each year for a one year study, the equivalent of their third year. More recently, the universities of Lyon III and Louvain-la-Neuve gave us an opportunity to send students over there for one year. In exchange, these sister universities send students to Tamkang. These young European students will cement the friendship already existing between our institutions. They will give an opportunity to our students to chat with them and thus contribute to the improvement of our students’ French proficiency.

Being always eager to ameliorate our teaching techniques, we have decided reform the courses for the goal of preparing our students for the Delf and the Dalf. Those two examinations are equivalent to the TOFEL, and it gives us an international reference of excellence. This objective criterion will allow us to constantly work for helping students to be competent in their language abilities.

We are also working on our web page on the Internet, enriching the contents of our web page, establishing numerous links to relevant French web pages. A project which consists of an index of French sources will allow our faculty and students to browse our web page  more efficiently.

In the future, we will enhance the distant learning capabilities of our department, in order to adapt to an ever-changing world; on the other hand, we will also never depart from our foremost duty : teaching French.

The Institute

In September 2001, we welcomed the first group of students in our Institute of French civilization. This institute’s goal is to cultivate specialists in French studies, who will be able to understand and finally use the different aspects of French civilization, to build a bridge between Taiwan and France.
