The Spanish Department was established in 1962 as the first of its kind in the Republic of China.

    Every year, there are 120 students admitted to this Department. In 1984, it forged sisterhood ties with the University of Costa Rica, in 1988 with the University of Navarra of Spain, in 1992 with the Autonomous University of Mexico, and I 1999 with the University of Chile in South America.

    During these years, those who have been in charge of the Department of Spanish are Prof. Liu Chang-shiao, Dr. Chen Yea-hong (former president of Tamkang University), Dr. Hung Chien-chang (former dean of the Faculty of International Studies), Dr. Francisco Luis Pérez, Dr. Wang Shiu-chi, Dr. Kung Kwo-wei and Dr. Ana Wu.

    The present director now is Ana Wu.
