About Department

Short history of the Department


The Department was established in 1958. It is one of the oldest departments of chemistry in Taiwan. After many years of hard-working, we see considerable progress in aspects including the faculty, equipment, instruments, and library materials. The following is a summary of our development during these year:

For many years, our department have been financially supported by the university chancellor and board of directors, with the help of the department chair, the faculty and students. We are now a renowned, full-fledge department, with student association comprising undergraduate, graduate and PhD students and alumni association.


Educational goals

Chemistry is a quintessential part for the progress of science. In order to train top science talents for the country and society, our educational goal includes:

  1. developing basic and professional knowledge of chemistry and experiment skills.
  2. developing professional ability of practical chemical execution
  3. developing professional chemical ethics and ability of life-long learning

Students’ core ability indexes

The department has the responsibility of training technological talents for the society. Accordingly, the students of our department should be equipped with the following abilities as their basic training:

  1. Having the basic scientific knowledge of physics and mathematics applicable to the field of basic chemistry.
  2. Having the basic knowledge of organic, physical, inorganic chemistry and instrumental analysis, and expanding the knowledge in other professional fields like bio-chemistry, material chemistry, etc.
  3. Having sufficient basic chemistry experiment technique and the ability of applying it to other professional chemistry experiments.
  4. Having professional ethics for a chemistry-related career and ability to solve future chemistry-related professional questions.

Vision Strategy

We are currently cooperating with the Ministry of Education for promoting related policy and executing the project of “Development of bio-chemistry and material chemistry.” In order to accentuate the department’s feature in its development, which means strengthening the material chemistry and bio-tech features, we are planning to open innovative courses related to bio-analysis and bio-physics, and adopt a three-year project to improve the basic experiments in the university division in order to achieve our goal of balancing theory and practice in the teaching. For now, we have required the experiment of “Agarose Gel Electrophoresis of DNA separation” to be practiced in freshmen general chemistry course. Furthermore, with our purchasing of a Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer, we have been planning and designing two experiments, “DNA denaturation experiment” and “DNA intercalating dye experiment,” and completing related textbook editing and conducting pre-experiment and instrument testing.


With the subsidy from the Ministry of Education on the “four-year project of elevating college basic education,” as part of “Program for Promoting Academic Excellence of Universities,” our department obtained 20 million NTD subsidy from executing “Project for elevating college basic chemistry education for the integration of interdisciplinary teaching and experiment.” We plan to renew entirely the technique and content in the college-level laboratories and develop integrated interdisciplinary chemistry course for college students in order to combine college-level basic chemistry content with advanced material and bio-tech field contents, allowing students to apply their study in the future.


The focuses and goals are:

  1. Uniting the power of chemistry departments in Taiwan and build a college-level chemistry experiment database for integrated college-level interdisciplinary and general knowledge courses and experiments.
  2. Connecting the interdisciplinary courses with the material and biological technologies, which are important for the new century, we consider it necessary that textbooks on chemistry experiments should include interdisciplinary “integrated experiments,” coordinating with basic skills of research laboratory of chemistry and high-tech industrial applications.

Chemistry database can provide the need of domestic colleges for chemistry, chemic-engineering, and professional industrial education. Our goal includes developing interdisciplinary chemistry courses as the basis for developing the advanced technological program in college basic education. We aim at developing general education in chemistry and media to enhance the scientific cultivation in college level basic education.


International communication agents training program We use fund raising and subsidy from extra-curriculum academic institutes to encourage and support graduate students to go abroad for participating in academic activities like short-term visit, cooperating with researching, and attending conferences in order to elevating the standard of research of our faculty and broaden the prospect of our graduate students and, consequently, enriching the quality of their theses.


Accepting foreign students and post-doctoral researchers for on-site studies We provide students information for international academic communication and subsidies and encourage them to apply. We also require the English and Japanese departments to supply with suitable teachers to teach courses of foreign languages in our department to enhance the students’ language abilities.


Advanced goals

  1. Further education

    Recently, more than half of the graduating students in our college division continue their education in domestic graduate institutes or pursue further education abroad. Some graduates in the master program choose to go abroad for PhD, and some others stay in domestic PhD programs.
  2. Career

    Our college graduates mostly pursue their careers in the industries or academic institutes. The alumni have outstanding achievements. Currently, our alumni serve in many civil offices, colleges, and private companies. Those who choose to be entrepreneurs are also having good performances.
  3. Further education and career counseling

    Each semester, we would invite alumni who are studying in domestic institutes to have meetings with our faculty and students, allowing them to know the situation of domestic institutes and encouraging them to apply. We also invite alumni from abroad to have speeches or discussions introducing scientific advances and the situation of studying abroad. On the day of school festivals, we would invite our alumni to return and have conversations, provide scholarships, give speeches, and share their working experiences.
